So you say you don't like them?

We have wonderful school cooks, they give us great menu's and alot of homecooked nutritious food.

Yesterday we had Baked Ham & Sweet Potatoes, it was delicious, but alot of the students left their Sweet Potatoes and said they didn't like them. So as very few came for seconds, there were alot leftover.

So today as they came through the line, they spotted the Pumpkin Pie at the end with great excitement. It was a huge hit, we went through almost 4 pans of it and many came back for seconds.

They ASSUMED because it looked like it, smelt like it and tasted like it, that it WAS Pumpkin Pie.

SSSHHHH....actually it was Sweet Potato Pie, but we didn't correct their assumption, seeing as they enjoyed it so much! ;-)

Tomorrow they will be getting a delicious chocolate cake, in which there might just be a few Beets, leftover from today! I always heard the best way to get kids to eat veggies is to disguise them, well apparently it's too true LOL!

  1. A very good idea. Maybe they should try sweet potato fries.
I love the idea of grocery delivery. Our local very small fuel station/mini mart offers delivery of items over $15, but I'm not sure for how much. A lot of seniors live here so that would be convient. We are at least 30 miles from a major grocery store.
Thanks for the tip about HTML, I still have much to learn about that.

  3. It escapes my mind now, but some famous actor's wife did a book on this last year. I can not remember at all who it was - that'll drive me nuts!

  6. Gee I don't remember food this good in my school cafeterias... We had "mystery meat" ALOT... I always took my lunch since we never knew what they were serving.

I don't have an answer to get kids to eat veggies. You have to start them when they are very young... It takes work on the part of parents--which doesn't happen very often. Disguising them is probably a good idea.

  14. When my own kids were small, I would make squash casserole several times a week. I always told them it was pie and they could have some for dessert. And they always ate it all up, for dessert. Now that they are grown up, that casserole is the favorite of all of them. I don't know if they still eat it for dessert or not.

  15. When my daughter was little, she ate cabbage (unusual for kids), but refused to eat brussel sprouts.
I told her they were little cabbages, and she never stopped eating them !
Mind over matter I guess ?
I thought your food looked like brownies...lol

  16. I hope nobody spills the beans to the kids.
Sweetie makes a mean chocolate zucchini cake loaded with vegetables. SuperPizzaBoy still hasn't caught on.

  18. What a great post! When I was in China I quickly learned not to ask what I was eating. Evidently the same principle works for elementary school children!

  19. I LOVE sweet potato pie.

My friend makes brownies with beans in them. Her son took them to school and his friends were eating them and loving them, until he told them what was in them. LOL More for him he said.

Unfortunately for me, I have to know what is in food because of my allergies.

  22. I like both pumpkin and sweet potato pies but I think sweet potato is my favorite. Most people I know feel the same. Wish I had a piece right now. :-)

  23. Wonderful!

My husband doesn't like sweet potatoes. He's the first person I had ever met who doesn't like them and that used to seem extremely bizarre to me. How can anyone not like sweet potatoes? Unfortunately he has very clever taste buds and I wasn't able to fool him with "pumpkin" pie.

  26. Ok I just want to point out that when the next National Kiss A Lunchlady day comes around, you need to kiss the crap out of these ladies, because I can guarentee you that in the LS county school district, for example, they aren't getting anywhere near this level of haute cuisine.

  27. Woops, "LA County", I mean. My fingers aren't warmed up yet =)
