My World

Elk City was an early Route 66 town. In 1931 the US Highway 66 Association held its annual convention here and more than 20,000 people attended!

That was an impressive crowd in those days, with travel more difficult and much slower.

The National Route 66 Museum celebrates Route 66, not only in Oklahoma, but in all eight states it passes through.

The museum focuses on the people who lived, worked and traveled this world famous route and visitors walk through all eight states!

The realistic murals and exhibits feature vintage automobiles and antiques from the hey-day of Route 66.

This museum is about 90 minutes south of us and always makes a great day out for our visitors.

    ohh love the Route 66 museum out there.

    I have heard lots of stories of my grandmother speeding down Route 66 when my father was young. They traveled a lot, and apparently she like to travel pretty fast!

    On my semi-annual drive (all near Route 66) between Albuquerque and Springfield (MO), Elk City is my saving town when heading east. After the nothingness of Texas, is the first "real" town.

    I would love to hit that museum, I've grown up in a family that has loved old cars and motorcycles. It's good times!

    Great looking museum. My Route 66 travel has all occurred further west. I still like to drive it, although much of pavement is pretty rough.

    Right up my street. I will see many of these when the TT is on. Route 66 is such an iconic phrase.

    I'm going to have to get out there with the kids. That looks like fun!

    We got lost on the Mother Road not long after we moved here. Drove past the Blue Whale of Catoosa. There's a long strip of 66 which runs through north Tulsa.

    I wasn't aware of the museum. I'd love to visit it someday. We drove the entire length of Route 66 on our honeymoon in 1969. Haven't been on it since as I'm from the East coast.

    Thanks for the tour around that museum. 66 is mostly known to me from animation movie Cars and other movies. I like the history of it.

    I love this post, as I grew up a few miles north of Rte. 66 in San Bernardino, CA and Rialto, CA....1948 - 1968.

    i have been to elk city a few times enroute to points north and east :)
    never had a chance to visit the museum though.
    enjoyed the photos and commentary.
