Brit' Word of the Day

Todays BWOTD is one I still use occasionally:

"I was totally gobsmacked!"

'Gobsmacked' = Astonished or astounded

The more literal translation would that somebody smacked you in the mouth, as gob is a slang word we use for mouth. I hasten to add this is a word my parents disapproved of when I was young, viewing it as somewhat downmarket!

We also use it as part of a word that replaces your word 'Jawbreaker'. A hard candy you suck on, in England is known as a 'Gobstopper' which is self-explanatory.

There you go, everything you never knew you needed to know about the word 'Gob', well except one crude version that I'll keep to myself ;-)
