A highly appropriate BWOTD for current times:
"They're definitely in stook"In stook (said: shtook) = in financial trouble.
I tried to research where this originates from, but it's a pure slang term and in reality means a bundle, heap or sheath of grain! I guess it could have developed from being in a bundle/heap of trouble.
I'm so glad you are blogging regularly again. I miss bwotd!
ReplyDeleteI believe it is a yiddish word 'shtuk' and basically means 'in trouble'. I always knew my background would come in useful one day!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say the same thing as NorthWestLondgonGirl. Sounds yiddish, and yiddish is always fun.
ReplyDeleteI dont ever recall hearing this as a Yiddish term .. sore-us (phonetically spelled) is the word in Yiddish for trouble .. at least it was the word my grandmother used
ReplyDeleteOh, I like this one. Fun!
