Kindleitis

That's what I think I have these days, it's a new ailment but highly contagious and hard to shake off once established.

I received my Kindle 3 at the end of November and I am not sure it's been further from my person than about 4ft since then! It literally goes everywhere with me, even in the loo!

It has already seen the inside of a many handbags, slept next to me in 5 different beds on 2 different continents, flown at 30,000 feet, taken a train, taken a monorail, been to school, been for a chinese, been to see the Doctor, been through immigration, been xrayed by the TSA, been on numerous car rides, been passed around by friends and family, been photographed, been slept or stood on by Bon Bon a few times (she seems to have a thing for the texture of the leather cover!)...basically wherever I go my Kindle goes.

I am whizzing through books at an unbelievable rate of knots, in 21 days I have read 8 books and two of those books were over 700 pages long! It's just so handy, if I get a spare few minutes anywhere, I whip out my Kindle and read.

The biggest downside is I no longer want to read an 'actual' book, if it's not on my Kindle I just don't want to mess with it! I have book club reads I have acquired ahead of time and now I have to force myself to read them, or stop myself from downloading them too, that's how bad my Kindleitis has got. And remember, I was the woman who thought I'd never want one, because I loved the 'feel' of my books!

The fact I have still only spent the 99c a month on the daily Free Kindle Books blog and $10 on actual downloads isn't helping either. I now have 100 books downloaded, nearly all free and so it's not even costing me anything.

This may just be the greatest invention since sliced bread, seriously. All that's left is for me to name my Kindle and my addiction will be complete!

Any name suggestions??

(Now plodding off to bed depressed because I have to read an actual paper book for the club)

  2. It does sound as if you have it bad, but anything that encourages reading is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. So what are you going to name it?

  3. My husband has caught that itis too! He loves it!

And your Kindle has more of a social life than me, or many people I know!

Enjoy - I think there might be another purchased in our house very soon - these big tomes beside my bed are like have a pre-bedtime work out, trying to hold them upright to read!

George, I'm a thinking on it!

  5. Is a leather cover necessary? I didn't order one. My Kindle 3 is due in Hawaii around Jan 25, per email from Amazon yesterday.

  6. The one thing that really was/is a problem for me is that I've seen the Overdrive system at our Honolulu Library. All the books (many of my favorite current popular authors)are so nicely organized and ready to download for free to Nook or the Sony Reader, but not the Kindle. Still, I'm really now leaning toward your Kindle just because you've said you can find a lot of free choices elsewhere. It's also still rated at the top of its class.

Are there other sites than the one you've given us? You're getting me all excited! I've been doing a lot of researching and it's so amazing how passionate people are about their e-readers.

  7. Good grief speaking of dramatic skies -- that header photo is unbelievable! Thanks for your recent visit. I wonder if there's a word for our new addiction to electronic companions..I'll have to think of one

  8. So the 99 cents a month is worth it? Whatever you do, don't read Wuthering Heights. Gah!!

I find myself in a similar fix. I usually have the Kindle on me, but don't spend a lot of time reading it. However, I haven't picked up a "real" book since I got the Kindle. My poor library.

  9. I really want a kindle too! I think I might have to get one with Tax rebate.
I love reading but hardly find the time these days. It looks like a really great invention.
It looks like yours is gettimg well used and Im glad your liking it :)

  11. I share your malady....and have for quite a while. Although my Kindle has traveled across the country, it hasn't left the USA yet.

In fact my post on January 7, 2010, was about my Kindle reading. We're becoming part of a pretty big club I think.

  12. Like you I love the feel of books.

I haven't tried a Kindle or anything else like it. I thought about it for holidays etc but I absolutely hate reading on my laptop, phone etc. I'm interested to know if it's a different experience Sarah. Also can you read in sunshine?

My other reason for not using this technology is I try to support our local library otherwise it will close. The risks are high in the current economic climate. At present they don't seem to have any services compatible with Kindle etc. I've asked if they have anything in the pipeline!

  13. I share you affliction. It is so bad that I get books from the library to start and if I like them I'll download them on the Kindle.

I use the Kindle app on my ipod touch to read my Kindle books while waiting in line or the other few free moments that I have during the day.

I haven't thought about naming it. As you know I already call one of my GPSr's "Sarah."

  14. Love your Kindle cover! I understand what you mean about the addiction. I read on my unit until after 3 a.m. this morning --The Man Who Knew Too Much by G.K. Chesterton. Gaaaah!
However, having a Kindle will, I think, not prevent me from supporting my local library. Fact is, my first Kindle read, a free book, was a 'cozy' that I enjoyed. It's the first of several by the same authors, so instead of buying the Kindle editions, which range in price from $5.29 to $9.99, I went online to my library and requested the next two books in the series. I'm going to try hard not to pay for something I can get at no cost.

Your enthusiasm will probably sell a few Kindles today!

  15. My hubby gave me an ipad for Christmas, but I probably would have been just as happy with the Kindle. I haven't learned all the bells and whistles on the ipad. I probably need to get our 11 year old to teach me.

  16. I too love my kindle. It makes reading more convenient for me. And yes Winifred you can read in sunlight. It has an amazing display on it.

  17. Gigi, no a cover is not essential, what you see on mine in the picture is actually a 'skin', which is for scratch protection and to look pretty!

The Hubster & I both have the lighted leather cover as well. For me it was essential as I read in bed after lights out. And with all the stuff I have in my handbag, I felt it would protect the screen.

  18. Funny, I was just going to ask you if you'd named it. I feel it should have an old librarian name like Eunice to balance out the hi techness.

So I have to warn you, I had a Kindle, but once I got an iPad, I could read from my Kindle account and now iBooks too. Now I've given my Kindle to my son ;) XOL

  19. Please support a fellow brit married to my okie daughter and check out Evil UnLtd by Simon Forward on your kindle. I've been resisting it but I accosted an e-reader in McDonald's this a.m. and he gave me a 10 minute commercial for kindle. Even though you can't get books from the library on it, it seems to be the reader of choice.

  20. Oooh, good to hear this endorsement. I was looking at the e-readers at Best Buy around Christmas time and must admit, I never realized what a cool device they really are. So much more than just a way to read books. I may have to invest sooner or later since my stack of books just annoys me these days. I love the "feel" of books also but can imagine that this is a great way to carry one around with you at all time. A girl I know at work has hers on her desk at all times.

  22. I look at Kindles with an envy I can scarcely conceal.

I recently started reading books on my iPhone... before then I was quite snooty about not reading "real" books. But now... now I want something with a bigger screen. The iPhone can only show about 7 words at a time.

I just can't justify the expense to myself right now, but soon... soon...

  23. Oh, no. Not this. I don't want any more gadgets righ now - new camera and new iPod keeping me busy. and yet an e-reader is calling my name. Help!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I was convinced that I wouldn't like reading from a screen but, you've convinced me that i should give it a go!

  25. Thanks Sarah and Hubster!
Been in touch with our local library and they're about to make the decision on downloadable e-books. I think it's about which to go with, some libraries have gone with Sony readers. Don't know why there's not a single format. I'll wait to see what they decide. Got to support them in these difficult economic times.

  26. I do love my Kindle and it is easy to slip into the purse. I seem to read much faster on the thing but I still so love real books too and since I have hundreds I haven't read on my bookselves, well, I will be busy for sure.
