You...Sarah, thanks SO much for sharing the photos! You do INDEED have "green fingers", as I'm learning to say over here.

I vaguely remember my grandmother in Arkansas having clematis. But I've really gotten into them since moving to Oxfordshire -- they are all over the place! We got lucky enough to already have some well-established ones in the house we bought last year, but I've added about a half dozen more. We have a LOT of walls which are just perfect for them, and they grow so well here.

As for the Alstroemaria (sp?), I've never tried growing them before. As one of your other readers commented, they are also my favorite cut flowers. I fell in love with them when I lived in Manhattan, because every single NYC greengrocer sells them in abundance. They were not too expensive, and they lasted a long time. I used to buy multiple bunches and put them together in a huge vase. If your mum used to grow them, I'll have to take a look at availability in our part of England.

One last thing. Have you ever been over to a gardening blog I've linked? It's called "Zanthan Gardens", and it's written by a woman in Austin, TX, who is married to a British expat. If you haven't visited it yet, do. She really knows a lot, and she's an entertaining writer. (And it's yet another example of what John and I affectionately call a "mixed marriage"!)

JanetJanethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16494516976868488211noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2176805307442675187.post-49675885669823199922008-05-30T01:13:00.000-05:002008-05-30T01:13:00.000-05:00Thank you everyone, I inherit my green thumb from ...Thank you everyone, I inherit my green thumb from both sides of the family, so it was inevitable :-)

When we moved in here all we had were a couple of rose bushes that bloomed and nothing else. So I have worked hard to pack my beds full of natural beauty. But the real stars are my huge beds of Canna Lilies in all colours, so more piccies when they bloom.

Alstroemaria I purchased from Lowes, they have them now and I am in region 6a/b. They do not like full hot sun all day, so I put them in a bed that gets morning sun only but is against the house so sheltered. I have always adored these flowers, my mum used to grow them when I was at home.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09542425639950850366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2176805307442675187.post-42964345490634293152008-05-29T21:48:00.000-05:002008-05-29T21:48:00.000-05:00No way! They matched the Alstroemaria in the bouquets they were carrying. Complelety lovely and so classy. Your blooms are all so beautiful, but the photo of the yellow and violet Alstroemaria were particularily special.
