Todays BWOTD is going to be a popular one I think:
"We all had a good old argy-bargy" 'Argy-bargy' = a lively and confrontational discussion This dates back to the late 1800's and is basically a duplication of 'argue' with links to Scottish & English dialect. Most people would say this is a very lively discussion, but some would also use it if it got mildly physical too.
It's certainly one of the most fun Brit expressions and a great one for causing utter confusion for those not in the know. So go forth dear friends, have/cause an argy-bargy and then use this BWOTD!
I love that things can get 'mildly physical' and still be called 'a good old' anything. Love this one.
ReplyDeleteI love this one. Brand new to me.
ReplyDeleteAh .. a lot of Argy-Bargy goes on in Casa Edelstein where two very opinionated people live ...
ReplyDeleteI want to use this but am not sure of the pronunciation---is it arjee-barjee or argee-bargee?? ;-)
ReplyDeleteHard g or soft g?
ReplyDeleteEither way, it's a cute word!
It is pronounced with a soft g - arjy-barjy :-)
ReplyDeleteI love it! Haven't heard that for a while..
ReplyDeleteYes I think there has to be at least a little finger poking if not some actual pushing and shoving going on for it to be true argy-bargy.
ReplyDeleteI love the word argy-bargy. Or compound word. Or two words merged together into a phrase. But I thought it was with a real "g" sound. Like Argeeee bargeeee. A general all purpose Brit word that means lots of things!
ReplyDeleteOk let me try this again!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like G as in Geee Whizz
