So on Monday my first day back at school, I of course had a moment of drama, a crazy one!
I had a mom and her Pre-K (4yr old) in to enroll, when her little boy spotted a HUGE Grasshopper on my wall...and we all know how much I HATE Grasshoppers!
As is usual here, he looked like he was on speed for growth and I was completely freaked out. But this time so was mom, who it turns out had a bad experience as a child with one. Her dad knocked one off her arm when she was little and the head was left behind on her, ever since they freak her out too.
So let me paint you a picture....HUGE Grasshopper on wall too high for 4 yr old to reach. Me aka. Mrs 'brave professional' School Secretary lifts him up so HE can grab it for us. But he's not quite fast enough and it leaps onto the carpet, I scream, mom screams and 4yr old races after it!Each time he goes to grab it he just misses it and it jumps, under my desk, up the wall and into my trash can. There the 4yr old contemplates his next move, as mom advises him "grab the legs like dad has shown you" and we both stand well back!Out it jumps again straight onto mom who screams and backs into the wall, whilst our little hero scrabbles after it. Enough is enough for me now, so I make an 'All Call' announcement into the main school (no students yet) - "This is the office, we have a MAJOR problem with a Grasshopper and I need IMMEDIATE HELP from someone" this was accompanied by background shrieking from mom. I get a callback from a room to say help is coming, but in the meantime we have him spotted under the fax stand.Mom asks me for a paper towel, which she bravely hands to her 4yr old and instructs him to cover the Grasshopper with it! He succeeds and with much encouragement from us, he picks it up and gets it outside just as help arrives. So two grown women were saved from Grasshopper horror by about a 3ft tall 4yr old, needless to say he is already my fave Pre-K student! Oh how I've missed work and it's dramas!
HILARIOUS, Sarah! I laughed aloud at this story. I can just picture the drama.
ReplyDeleteVery funny! I hope you gave the kid a medal for bravery -- for dealing with the two hysterical women, not the a grasshopper.
ReplyDeleteLOL!! That sounds like something I would do.
ReplyDeleteOh, now that is too funny! I too could picture the scene. A good laugh to start my day.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome. My own toddler is looking at me weird as I sit here chuckling away. I love the whole, 'grab it by the legs like dad showed you'. Obviously this wonderful little man has had to learn the manly art of saving his mom from grasshoppers, and at such a tender age. Still chuckling, now son is laughing with me so he won't feel left out.
ReplyDeleteOMG lmao. I swear I would have freaked out also. When I was a teenager I walked out the front door to my parents house to have 3 the darn things land in my hair. I was screaming bloody murder. It took my baby sister to come to my rescue and pick the grasshoppers out of my hair. Yuck, Yuck. =) Cute story Sarah. Thank heaven for 4 year old little boys.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Great play-by-play description, and kudos to the little boy hero. I'd be creeped out, too, if a large grasshopperlanded anywhere near or on me. Hope it doesn't turn out to be a plague of grasshoppers!
ReplyDeleteThe kids save the day again ... I wonder how he will describe that in his blog in fourteen years time?!!!
ReplyDeleteOh too funny! Welcome back to work! But those hoppergrasses are freaky pre-historic looking things.
ReplyDeleteDid you say, "Ahhh, grasshopper, time for you to go ..." ????
First may I say: UGH and EWWW and AAAARGH .. now I have that outta my system may I say there's nothing more gross to me than a grasshopper .. except for spiders ... just sayin' ...eeeeeeeewwwww
ReplyDeleteIf the visual image of you two cowards were not so funny I'd insist on a reprimand...but I'm laughing to hard!
ReplyDeleteSandi
We have hundreds of them around our house. (probably thousands actually) You're going to think I'm crazy but I sort of like them. Aren't they supposed to be good luck?
ReplyDeleteI posted a picture of one a few weeks ago but I keep trying to get a better one.
Sarah, you had me laughing so hard one of my co-workers came in and asked me what was so funny! Glad the grasshopper was returned to nature where he/she belongs!
ReplyDeleteLOL.. so funny Sarah ;)
ReplyDeleteThey won't eat much !
Truthfully, I'm the same about June bugs, they always get in my hair, no-one else's, and I have to do a little "pee pee" dance before I'm able to pull them out.
I entertain everyone, but not myself.
I can imagine you, the English secretary, all proper and prim, losing it over a grasshopper ;)
So funny sweetie and I love this post. Were you watching me in my class recently? =)
ReplyDeleteOh Sarah, you had me laughing out loud at the office and B wondering what in the world I was laughing about. So funny and your description was very vivid.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have been a fly on the wall and to have watched this. Hehehehehe........ jan
ReplyDeleteO..M..G!! Thank you for my after dinner, pre-bedtime snort laugh!!! Now that pre-K youngun has HEWGAH he-man self-esteem.
ReplyDeleteGrasshoppers are just plain freaky looking!
ReplyDeletePoor little grasshopper!
ReplyDeleteI prescribe watching Pinocchio and Mulan IMMEDIATELY to get over your irrational dislike of these harmless little creatures.
I am through laughing and my hands are steady so that I can type.
ReplyDeleteLoved the story. thanks for sharing.
