Brit' Word of the Day....

This one comes straight from a mis-understanding in a conversation with Hubster last night whilst watching TV:

"We are going punting on the River Cam today"

'Punt/Punting' = A particular type of boat on rivers, that's flat and someone stands on the back pushing you along with a long pole.

This is the same 'action' as a Gondola and is popular at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but our Punt boats are flat unlike a Gondola.

To an American, punting is something you do on 4th down in Football!

But it's also an expression if you're working on a project and reach a point where you don't know what to do, you might say:

'well I guess I'm gonna have to punt' = let somebody else try

I learned something new today... about the American football meaning of punt. I guess you were leaving 'punter' for another day.
