Today is a classic Brit' expression, more often used by northerners:
"My giddy aunt would you look at that!"
'My giddy aunt' = has no exact translation but is used as an expression of surprise
........and has nothing to do with having a slightly dizzy aunt!!

Just dropped by this morning, after seeing the link to your site on Expat Mum's.
My situation is reverse of yours. I'm an Okie myself (Tulsa -- although I haven't lived there since I was 12) but now live in the UK. My British husband and I got married in 2006, about 2 years after I moved over here. I work for an energy education provider in Oxford as part of their faculty, and we live in a village in the northern part of Oxfordshire.
And having lived also in Southern Illinois and in Houston (where I spent most of my adult life), I DO understand about those tornadoes! I lived in NYC for 7 years, too, and while there we had a few tornadoes in the area. (My friends blamed me for those, of course, being an Okie!)
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello. Come by Lord Celery some time and see life from the reverse standpoint. OH...and I love your "Brit Word of the Day..." features!

Sarah, where does that 'giddy aunt' come from? Just as mysterious as 'Bob's your uncle'. Do you think they're related? Maybe even married to each other?

I LOVE 'my giddy aunt' as a saying. My wife - who's American - always says "Jimminy Cricket", and it's just not the same if you ask me...
