It is believed this comes from a maritime term referring to when a block and tackle were jammed against each other to stop a load from moving.

I actually used the word Choca this morning, (abbreviated Choc a block) and about 5 people looked at me with that blank look you get when they have NO idea what you could mean. When will I learn?
