Brit' Word of the Day....

Today's BWOTD is a common saying back home:

"I always like to have a bolt-hole I can go to when I need to"

'Bolt-hole' = Sanctuary

Somewhere you like to go to when you need to escape from everyone and spend some quiet time on your own or with a someone special. This might be a room in your home, your church, a fave' cafe/bar 'where nobody knows your name', a vacation spot or if you're me - my hammock in the yard. It has nothing to do with holes in walls!

Hi, I just linked through to your blog from A Novelist's, I think. Anyway, thought I would say hi. I am an American living in Hertfordshire. Saw that you used to live in Watford...love the Costco there :)

You certainly have to be careful how you say it, because it could easily be misheard or misinterpreted to mean something completely different.

That's a new one for me!

Do you think that originated after the priests went in hiding during Elizabeth's reign? The priest holes?

You know my children spent the better part of their youth living in Bucks, so I am well aware of the bolt hole...thankfully, though they are grown men with families of their own, they still consider Mom's house their favorite Bolthole of all time...for where else could they come for comfort and stay for dinner and a nap?

AFF - that would seem very likely but I don't know for sure, it makes sense though.

Brad!!

Caitlin - welcome to my world from what used to be my world! ;-)

Sandi - indeed! Btw I have told you my Aunt lives in Beaconsfield!?

I think all my bolt holes definitely serve beer or wine. Even my back yard!

Another new one for me. It doesn't sound all that cozy though. ;)

Not heard that one before but today I was saying to myself "Naff" and thought of your blog and how it would be a good inclusion here.
