First day feedback

Thanks to you all for you kind wishes, I am pleased to report I had a great first day as an Elementary School Secretary.

Of course at the moment the school is on summer vacation, so it's just a few staff working or coming in and out during the day. I am on a 10 month contract so I get to work when I want to in consultation with my Principal in June and July. As my mum will be here in July and they need me right now, I am working the whole of June and just a few days in July.

In June the State runs the food programme providing 2 free meals for children each day and one of my jobs this month is to record attendance. So I am starting at 7:20am with breakfast until 8:30am, then I go to my office until 11:20am to work, before returning for the lunch at 11:30am for an hour.

In theory after that I am free to finish for the day, but today I was enjoying myself so much I worked through until 4:50pm! It was just so nice to be back in a familiar feeling office environment and be utilising my brain cells and getting familiarised with everything. One of the teachers who works in the same building was in all afternoon, so it was very handy to be able to ask her any questions. I will also work the afternoons when my Principal needs me to this month, as she teaches summer school in the mornings.

This morning I started in a room in the back clearing out stuff we won't be needing again and I also emptied, cleaned and re-organised my desk. Then this afternoon I spent on the computer organising all the previous secretary's documents into folders, which will make finding things much faster. I also personalised my new office with a couple of nice pictures and cleared out the fridge and set it to defrost overnight.

So a busy but extremely enjoyable day, I am just so delighted I got this job and also that I now have until August 14th to settle in and prepare before school starts. It was also great to turn out of school and drive exactly 7 miles down the empty highway and turn into my house, no more endless traffic jams to get to work 'pour moi'!

Girl, you landed on your feet! Couldn't wait to get back home and see what you had to say about your first day on the job. Being somewhat familiar with your former commute, I congratulate you! hehe. You and John will have to compare notes on the mileage to work one way compared to what you used to do in England. He was driving from Tring to Hatfield every day! Yikes! Now he is probably about the same as yours, certainly less than ten miles with only one right turn. Sounds like you will have loads of fun on this job! Congrats again

Oh PLEEZE come and work at my house! Everything you did today is desperately needed here.
OK, back to my senses. Great to hear someone who likes their job. Not too many people do these days and it's a shame.

Great to hear you enjoyed your first day. It's a job I always fancied, if I hadn't been a teacher. Weird to have the children starting back in August though. Lovely to have the time to get used to the place before that. I hope you continue to enjoy yourself.

Sarah, enjoy making the office your own! Do you get many kids using the meal program?

I can already tell you're going to be a pearl of a secretary. Your school won't know how they ever got along before you came along.
