I got the job I really wanted!

Most of you know I have been working as a 'freelance' substitute teacher the past 2 years in our local schools. During that time I soon found out there was one elementary school in particular I loved to work in and I felt very at home there. I have also developed some good friendships with the staff in this particular school and liking the people you work with and for, is crucial I think.

I also knew that if the School Secretary ever left it would be my perfect job and all my previous work experience would make it a very comfortable fit. Well 2 weeks ago she quit and so I applied and then kept everything firmly crossed. This is a job I have regularly substituted at both the Elementary and the High School, so I was hopeful I would have a good chance.

I got it! :-)

The new Principal, a very friendly, professional and enthusiastic lady called me this afternoon and after discussion we agreed terms. I am delighted and very excited and I am certain we will make a good team as I think we share similar working ethics and standards. It will also be fun to be working together both new in our roles and being able to change things up to suit the way she wants to run things. Although she is the 'new' Principal, she was promoted from 5th grade teacher, so we already know, respect and like each other.

Other big advantages from my point of view are it's just 7 miles from home on empty roads, the office is really nice, I get school hours and holidays, plus a 10mth contract although I can choose to work in June/July if I want to. Considering I need time to return to the UK every few years, or to be here when my mum comes for a month....this works brilliantly.

I will be starting in the next week, just doing half days in June to prepare for the new school year and then I will take July off to be with my mum.

I waited 2yrs before I plunged back into a full time job, but this was deliberate having had the 'big' career back in the UK. This time it was all about a nice job, that was well within my capabilities, with nice people and not too much stress. It took time to find the right thing, but I have no doubts whatsoever this job is it and I am very happy.

So no more substituting puking Pre-K'ers for moi, I will now be the one calling in some other unsuspecting sub' to do the dirty work! ;-)

Congratulations! This sounds like it was meant just for you and a perfect fit. How wonderful to know your co-workers before you begin, and better yet to know you like and respect them. Patience and a good plan worked out here very well. Very good! I am so happy for you!

Wow, the chances of getting a job with that much flexibility in the summer (unless you're actually teaching) are slim. Well done.

Also, i have a friend here at work who has a brother with Graves Disease. I gave her your blog-site to give to him for further reading. He will have to undergo some surgeries on his eyes so keep him on your good list!

Perfect! Absolutely wonderful! I'm so happy for you. I am certainly aware that the secretary's role in a school is vital. You're like the circulatory system for the school. When our secretary was absent, we all felt it. I can already tell that you're the sort of school secretary that will be there with a smile and welcome for everyone that comes into the building. I'll bet everybody loves your accent, too! :-)

Thanks everyone, I am very chuffed!

Pam - poor guy, I will be sure to do so.

Congrats, dear. That sounds like the best kind of job you could ever hope for. Not too much stress. The day ends and you don't bring it home, and teacher holidays. Rock on.

Wonderful news, Sarah! Congratulations! I can only imagine the pause that will follow the first few times you answer the phone calls of unsuspecting parents, etc - not expecting to hear YOUR accent! I'm so glad you got the job you wanted. You seem perfectly suited to it :~)

Congratulations! A job where you get school vacations, but have none of the 'homework' tachers get! I'd love it! You do realize that the 'secretary' runs the school?

I absolutely feel like "musings,"...you have the "feel" of a school secretary....a nice, friendly one...not a stuffy old crow type! LOL! Btw, I must have missed it all these years now...what was the big career in the UK again???? It's really buggin me now! :) M.

Oh, I'm so thrilled for you. I agree with the others about it being extra perfect because you get the environment and friendship of other teachers, with the vacation time of teachers, but none of the disciplining or outside-hours work that teachers must handle. I loved working in a school but not bringing everything home in the evening (even though I did love teaching and missed having my own students - I was able to meet that need by teaching GED classes in the evenings). I'm sure you will thrive!
