Needing decorating help...

So I have a bathroom with paint peeling off the previous layer of paint. The top layer is obviously not a 'bathroom' paint and so it has just not withstood the moisture levels. The top layer has a slight texture to it, so I either have to get it all off (which would be nigh on impossible as some area's are well bonded) or re-cover the whole lot to hide the different textures.

I am scraping off the loosest paint and having a go at everywhere else. My intention is then to retexturise the whole room but I think it will need priming beforehand?

Anyone had a similar situation and how did you do it?

(It's taken forever to type this as Bonnie keeps running across the keyboard!)

What you could do, is buy spackle in a tub. Slather on top of what you have (without scraping) and create a bumpy textured wall covering with a design originally created by you! Then once it dries (because its solid once it dries completely) you can paint it whatever color you wish or sponge if you like. And if you want to fill in a nail hole later - you just spackle it again *wink*

But will the spackle stick on the wall if there's alot of loose paint?

Because if it will then this would be perfect!

Buy a product called "Kilz". It is a primer and helps cover/kill any underlying mildew associated with the moisture. Should give your paint a better surface to stick to also. It rolls on just like paint.

Then apply the texture (and there is an art to the spackle application). I think there are also some roll-on texture products that make this fairly easy.

Then paint. Then post on your blog as the brit word of the day why it is called emulsion in England instead of paint! or why you call it "decorating" instead of painting!

i forgot to say that once you scrape the loose paint off the wall, then paint it with Kilz to prime and seal the walls before you do anything else. mybad

Can't face thinking about home improvement solutions as I've done so much in my time as a homeowner, but lordy that kitty is pretty - and I'm NOT a cat person either.

Sarah - I've done it before and it dries hard like drywall does. I've never had a problem with it not staying up because it just sticks like concrete. But it could bring you comfort in what pamokc said to buy. I'm with you - no fun scraping paper off walls..
