Definitely too much information!
It's Rattlesnake season here now and this caused some discussion on our local radio station this morning.Initially they were discussing whether the potential for torrential rain and flooding here this weekend will bring them all out into the water, something I don't even want to think about.But then things got much worse. They confirmed that if you chop the head off a Rattler, the thing can still bite you and inject the poison. EWWWW I got chills just thinking about it!! Not that there's anyway I'll ever be able to get close enough to a Rattler to chop it up you understand. No my policy is either run like hell screaming, or if a gun happens to be at hand, do my Annie Oakley impression! And I'll leave you with those images.These are not things I had to worry about in England!

I had heard that about rattlers and most snakes being able to still bite after you chop off their heads-yuck!! I'm with you I won't be getting close enough to do that!!
I remember my son when he was about 16 telling me, (while we stood in the pet store where I was buying koi food) to come look at the "ball python" they wanted to sell. I told him, not right now Michael, I don't have my hoe with me". An elderly lady nearly fell down with laughter...I took it we were on the same page! Keep your shootin' arn handy, Sarah...that's really the only way to approach a rattler!

Sandi LOL! Yep in mine and the hubsters opinion, the only good snake is a dead snake. In fact everyone I know around here feels that way, but then we have alot of Rattlers!
We have some problems with them in the desert areas in Nevada. I grew up watching where I walk. Mostly they warn you with their rattles. But we have family stories of 'rattlers (as they are called here), crawling into sleeping bags with people who are camped around a campfire. I guess they get cold, too.

I live in mortal fear that my dogs will come in contact with a rattle snake, we have plenty of them here in So. California. I ran over a five foot long rattler last summer, (not on purpose). I have an irrational fear of snakes. The fact that they are good swimmers freaks me out!
I once killed a copperhead in my bathroom. The first think I could think of was a large ax handle that was on the back porch so I ran and got that and smashed it's head with it. My husband quickly decided that it was time to fix that hole in the floor that I had been nagging him about.
One of my cats brought a baby snake of some kind in the house once and I'm always worried about that too.

I don't know why I have such fear of snakes but I do. I've only held garden snakes when I was little and I still get chills!
Hahahahaha! I'm with you. There is not a chance in "hail" that I would ever get close enough to a rattler to chop off his head. Are you kidding??????

There is a show on in the wee small hours here called Bizarre ER where they show 'unusual' cases in an ER somewhere in East Anglia.
Anyway the last one had a man who had been bitten by an adder (well the idiot had been out with his family and picked the damn thing up so fair enough I say) and no one at the ER knew what to do as they'd never seen a case before.
It almost killed him so I hope he learned his lesson. The only adder you should pick up should be a calculator !!

Yes, I often think how we never had to deal with things like snakes, scorpions, poisonous spiders, tornados, earthquakes or even way too hot sunshine. Then again we had to deal with constant dripping rain, didn't we? Never mind, have another nice cuppa--what number 250 or something?!
Damnit, I knew I should have skipped reading this post. ugh
We encountered 4 snakes on a walk-around last weekend... we were checking fences. No rattlers, but a couple were pretty big (bull snakes, I think). Regretfully, I did not take my camera on the walk-around, which I was instantly sorry for!
You chop the head off and it can still bite you? Yuuuuck! That reminds me of chickens who keep running after their head has been cut off. Double yuuuck!
