Rain on the Plain!

I woke up this morning to a lovely drizzly English morning...and then I realised it wasn't a dream, I was still in Okieland.

Days like this are a treat here and rare indeed. It's cool, in the low 60's and we have had light rain for a few hours now, lovely.

When we get a day like this, it reminds me I do actually miss the soft English drizzle. Here we get endless months of dry, warm or downright frying weather. I'm not complaining, I love the weather here 90% of the time and would take it over England anytime.

There's just nothing quite like waking up to a blue sky and sunshine almost year round. We just seem to get very few grey overcast days, which are prolific in England and those I do not miss, as they definitely effect your mood after a few in a row! But we could definitely do with a few more rainy days.

See my 'Rainometer' top left, showing 31/255 total days with rain, well I need to explain something about it. The 31 is NOT equal to days of rain, it's equal to 'reasonable moments' of rain! There's probably at most, 1 or 2 full days of rain in that count. So it's mainly made up of anything from a few minutes to a few hours of rainfall, this year to date! We are very dry, riverbeds are just sand, drought plants are thriving and we all celebrate any rain.

Next year I would probably be better to measure inches of rain, especially as we have a big rain guage on the fence. People only have rain guages if it happens rarely enough you want to know how much actually fell!

But the Okieland weather Gods do have a sense of humour. On the day we got married in 2005, it was overcast and rained all day for the first time in weeks. I think they were just trying to make me feel right at home!

I miss English drizzle. I can see why it's not popular in England, but you miss it when you don't have it.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest back in the days when it used to rain like the dickens up there. I grew up in fog, drizzle, and downpour. I miss the rain and the wet.

Enjoy your wet days. And send a little our way, won't you?

We've had a few drizzly days lately, since the cooler weather has been around. I feel exactly the same, and always say to The First Sergeant...it's raining, like in England!
Ahhhhh, such a gentle, slow, rain. A rain where you can actually use an umbrella without the fear of it being blown inside out before you take your hand off the latch.
Send some my way will you ?

We're longing for rain here in northern California, too. It's wildfire season and we live in the dry foothills where any little spark can start an inferno.

I guess we appreciate more what we don't usually get.

When I lived in SA we had odd days like that and it made me feel homesick for the UK. Now I'm back in Britain, our rare days of sunshine make me homesick for SA. There's no pleasing some people!

Does the dry weather have a bearing on the number of tornadoes you get?

We keep getting drizzly type weather here lately, too. Otherwise, it's hot and muggy which I don't much care for. You must have water problems then?

TLH - generally tornadoes need the hot weather to form. The perfect conditions are usually where we have high heat in the day and then a rapid cooling after 4pm, creating instability and storms. This is why Fall & Spring are the usual times you see them forming.

Kay - no actually we haven't got water supply issues yet, just enough rain so far!

If you ever feel the need for more wet than you get, come on to NYC .. we seem to have been having more than our share .. tho today the sun is shining again after 2.5 days of rain and grey skies

That's funny you mention this:
"When we get a day like this, it reminds me I do actually miss the soft English drizzle. "

--I just wrote a blog on something similar. I'm sure for you in Okieland getting days liek this are a particular treat.
