I found it!
Whilst the Hubster was filling the hole in the front yard, I took a 3ft metal spike and tested the ground around two external faucets. I am not strong and at the second one on the north side, I was able to easily push all 3ft into the ground. And when I removed it there was definite damp earth attached. So I showed the Hubster the evidence, he started digging and very soon the proof we had been looking for appeared. A foot down we hit WATER! The further he got down the worse the water, but finding the pipe took some time and digging. Finally we found the culprit, the collar had cracked between the 1-inch PVC and a galvanised pipe (Hubster dictated this techy bit!). And it was spewing out all over the bloody place with force! This was only about 10 seconds worth of water, before the main was closed! We don't use this tap at all, so the decision was made to cap it off. A piece of PVC pipe was removed, the capped end fitted and a block of wood placed between to exert pressure to stop it blowing back off. There really wasn't much I could do to help with this repair and so I was delighted to at least be able to find the problem for him. He finished up, whilst I cooked him a special dinner as reward for all his hard work.Good to know we won't be bankrupted by a water leak!

That's good news, Sarah. Now you won't have to worry about an astronomical water bill anymore.
That is wonderful news :o)
Now you can offer your services as a water finder .. how very excellent that you found it!
3 cheers for for you both, hip hip -hip hip - hip hip.
Glad you got the situation fixed! And I was especially glad to see you and your husband did it yourselves! Okay!
Sometimes a messy job like that gives a person the most satisfaction.
Take care.
Good job! Wonderful YOU were able to find and he was able to fix.
Good job Sarah. You were instrumental in this project!
After so much work, you both can take the day off!

Well so glad that's all sorted out.
How annoying, but you cracked the case m'dear ;)
Now, that's what I call teamwork!
Congratulations Think we should call you Mrs Marple.
It is so great that you were able to find this leak. But, wow! what a huge bill for water. I wonder if your homeowner's insurance will pay that? You have it well documented, I would say, by looking at all the pics in this post.
Yikes, that was a big leak, and YAY, you found it! Your husband is very handy! My hub has learned how to fix PVC water lines, too, which I am very thankful for.
If you explain the problem to the city water dept and request a credit due to the long time it took to find the leak, they might agree to it. Our water district, GDPUD, will do that for people who ask.
I want to know how he stayed so clean in all that mud?? BTW glad you found the leak.
