Brit Word of the Day

I used this the other day with our photocopier maintenance company and threw Wilma into complete confusion!

"The tray 2 display has a spanner symbol on it?"

Spanner = Wrench!

Once Wilma and I were on the same page, she asked me to spell it for her so she could use it on her engineers lol!

I'll never forget the first time my dad was underneath the car working, and told my 'to be' American husband, to hand him a spanner.....silence.
After explaining, we all had a good laugh, and still call it a spanner to this day ;)
I bet Wilma was shaking her head...lol

Lots of spanners in the oilfield, but we don't dare call them that.

I love the multitudes of meanings of spanner! Being a total spanner is nothing to be proud of! If any one calls you a spanner, then you have really ticked them off! next I will introduce you to being a plonker.

Bit like when the Ball & Chain was living in London and his next door neighbour asked him for a torch. He thought he was being asked for something with a big flame!

Strangely I understood spanner to mean wrench before this post -- I can only assume that I've been exposed to too much British English!

We have a friend who is Ex Brit who has often explained "proper" English to us. He is also a world traveler, now working in Thailand. Several years back we were left messages in the middle of the night from Siberia. It was always good to hear that Brit accent.

One day you'll put "a real spanner in the works" using Brit words in the US!

I love to watch the TV show "Top Gear", and learned what a spanner was from the show.
