'Cocoon' - the topper!

So it seems I am having a week for recommending things and next on the list is our new memory foam mattress topper from Serta purchased from Overstock.com.

There is a bit of a long saga behind our reasons for buying a mattress topper, I won't bore you with the whole sorry story, but I will just say this. Don't EVER buy a Sealy mattress set, do NOT believe the 10 year warranty they offer is worth a dime, and be prepared to have a huge ridge down the middle of said mattress only to be told it's a body imprint! (And if you look at comment #13 on this post, it seems we are not the only ones with this problem)

After no success with Sealy and not being ready to invest in another mattress just yet, we decided to try adding the memory foam topper for the timebeing. I would also add the Hubster and I are now of an age where various body parts stiffen up overnight (no sniggering!) and we wake easily. It probably doesn't help that there are 5 of us in our bed every night, including a total of 36lb of felines!

After airing it out for the required 3 days to get rid of that memory foam 'smell' we finally got to sleep on it Sunday night.

Wow! What a difference it makes, we are both sleeping like babies, no aching or stiff bits when we get up and we don't disturb each other when we move around during the night. The only small problem is trying to get the fitted sheet to stay on our very tall mattress now, we may have to go to an unfitted sheet, but who cares when it's so comfortable.

I did make the comment as we 'climbed' into bed Sunday night, that I felt a bit like the old fairy story "the Princess and the Pea' our mattress set is now so high!

Not long ago we also changed to memory foam pillows, so I would say we are now converts after some initial skepticism about it's merits. I would best describe memory foam as extremely forgiving, very supportive but comfortable, and it almost seems to cocoon your body which is very comforting.

So highly recommended for a great nights sleep. End of plug, before one of you thinks I'm trying out to be a QVC presenter sometime soon!

Thanks for the tip! We bought a Simmons mattress and box spring in September and love our bed. As with all Simmons, when he moves, I don't notice it.

As for the pillows, we buy them at Costco about twice a year. I prefer to change it when it gets stained or smelly.

Getting a good nights sleep is the only way to survive life ... you can find 'deep pocket' fitted sheets that can cover a mattress 15 in. high .. check out Bed Bath & Beyond online .. happy sleeping!

I agree with you. The foam topper makes my mom's hospital bed feel like heaven on earth.

I've been sleeping on memory foam for several years; can't beat it. Glad to know that I'm not the only one who sleeps with 30+ pounds of cats.

Like Daryl said, you can get extra deep fitted sheets quite easily. We invested in a Tempur Pedic a few years back and it's much better. The 7 year old saw a commercial for one the other day and is now extolling the virtues and telling us he needs one!

Thanks for the advice. I've been mattress shopping lately and was offered a seemingly good deal at Sleep America for a Sealy Eurotop. We have a thin layer of memfoam on the current lousy mattress and it doesn't help a bit. I'm not prepared to spend $1000s for a mattress but want to sleep well.

Thanks for this interesting post. That foam topper sounds like something we need to investigate.

Hi Sarah... Glad you found an alternative to your mattress situation.. I have heard that those toppers are good... We have a Simmons mattress --and it has been a good one.. I'll know to stay away from the Sealy ones when we start looking for a new mattress.

Thanks..
Hugs,
Betsy

Larry and I are lovers of the memory foam pillows. They are great for stiff necks, in preventing them I mean, LOL.
I haven't tried the memory foam topper but it seems like a very good idea.

Sarah, thank you for this lovely post!! My hubby and I also have a Sealy with a ridge down the center! We were also told it is a body imprint. I will be on the look out for one of those toppers. Hubby's back is aching every morning from our Sealy mattress and this will definitely help! Thanks so much for your plug!

Arrrghhh! Mattresses!!! I just hate the idea of even thinking about buying a mattress. Our Serta Vera Wang latex mattress has the SAME body indentation. So much for the thing just springing back.... riiiight... We paid a ton of money for it and it's already got that ridge in the middle. Arrrrghhh!

One of these days... perhaps we'll have to get a topper, too. Right now Art doesn't even want to think about anything for the bed.
