Bounteous Blooms

I thought I would share the beautiful blooms my garden is currently overflowing with in all areas. As you can see I love roses and clematis like most Brit's, but also have a passion for Asiatic Lillies.

Except for 2 of the roses, these are all plants I have put in myself since early 2006. All the roses were bought from Cottage Farms Direct which is linked in my 'Cool Online Places' down on the right and they all had a 1yr guarantee.

The final 2 pictures are of my all time favourite flower Alstroemaria in 2 different colours, I planted these last year and am delighted they have taken so well.

Sarah, beautiful flowers!! I am jealous. I wish my thumb was as green as yours. You did give me some great ideas yesterday. I will be shopping around.

Oh wow, it's simply beautiful at your house! Those are all so pretty, but I think the lillies are my most favorite. So gorgeous :)

Lovely photos! I can't believe you actually grow the astal-- (astil? astilmaria? ARG!! I forget how to spell them) those lovely little speckled lily thingies. Those are my favourite cut flowers, but it's too cold in winter to grow them here.

When my youngest daughter got married, she had one of her sisters in an icy butter yellow dress, and the other in an icy light violet dress. They matched the Alstroemaria in the bouquets they were carrying. Complelety lovely and so classy. Your blooms are all so beautiful, but the photo of the yellow and violet Alstroemaria were particularily special. Very nice gardening.

Sarah: Lovely lovely blooms! Where did you find the Alstroemaria? I have not heard of them before. Wonder if they would handle Zone 5 here in Colorado. I'll have to check.

Thank you everyone, I inherit my green thumb from both sides of the family, so it was inevitable :-)

When we moved in here all we had were a couple of rose bushes that bloomed and nothing else. So I have worked hard to pack my beds full of natural beauty. But the real stars are my huge beds of Canna Lilies in all colours, so more piccies when they bloom.

Alstroemaria I purchased from Lowes, they have them now and I am in region 6a/b. They do not like full hot sun all day, so I put them in a bed that gets morning sun only but is against the house so sheltered. I have always adored these flowers, my mum used to grow them when I was at home.

Sarah, thanks SO much for sharing the photos! You do INDEED have "green fingers", as I'm learning to say over here.

I vaguely remember my grandmother in Arkansas having clematis. But I've really gotten into them since moving to Oxfordshire -- they are all over the place! We got lucky enough to already have some well-established ones in the house we bought last year, but I've added about a half dozen more. We have a LOT of walls which are just perfect for them, and they grow so well here.

As for the Alstroemaria (sp?), I've never tried growing them before. As one of your other readers commented, they are also my favorite cut flowers. I fell in love with them when I lived in Manhattan, because every single NYC greengrocer sells them in abundance. They were not too expensive, and they lasted a long time. I used to buy multiple bunches and put them together in a huge vase. If your mum used to grow them, I'll have to take a look at availability in our part of England.

One last thing. Have you ever been over to a gardening blog I've linked? It's called "Zanthan Gardens", and it's written by a woman in Austin, TX, who is married to a British expat. If you haven't visited it yet, do. She really knows a lot, and she's an entertaining writer. (And it's yet another example of what John and I affectionately call a "mixed marriage"!)

Gorgeous. Mine are rather pathetic in comparison. nothing has even bloomed yet here.
