One of my least fave things about the USA!

And I truly can't really believe I am writing this about any CHOCOLATE of all things, but "good grief" Hersheys chocolate is just plain nasty!

Y'all have my sympathies having to grow up thinking this was good chocolate, unless you have ever tasted European chocolate, then you have no idea how good it can be. I bought a bag of the Hersheys Nuggets last week and could barely get one down. Today I got in from work and fancied a small chocolate 'hit' and this was all I had in, so I gave it another go. Ewww I actually spat chocolate in the trash can (truly astounding) and gave it up as a bad job!

I have found that the 'Dove' brand tastes somewhat like European chocolate. But if you really want to taste awesome chocolate then buy yourself either some Lindt (Swiss) or Green & Black's Organic - both available in your local Walmart. Otherwise any Belgian chocolate would be a good alternative or Cadburys over here isn't bad, but it's still different to the European version.

My all time fave chocolate is either 'Lindt' or the 'Galaxy' brand, which I haven't found available to buy here yet. So I have to rely on visitors from the UK bringing it for me, as mailing it doesn't do it any good!

All I can say is you are being seriously short changed as a nation in the chocolate department!

As a matter of fact, I just bought myself a bag of Dove dark chocolates. They're supposed to be high in antioxidants. :-)

If you don't know better, you never quite understand what others are talking about when they complain about food. My German neighbor used to constantly complain that Americans did not know how to bake bread. I couldn't understand what she was talking about. Then we went to Paris and had some of their French bread and saw the light. I do believe things are changing though... I think. My neighbor says our breads are improving now.

Hershey's is awful. I've also been fooled by Cadbury, thinking the Cadbury you get in the US is on par with the European one.

It isn't.

Lindt 80%. It's the only way to go. The first couple of times it doesn't seem quite sweet enough but go with it. Soon you will be hooked and then there's no going back. Can't you get it there? Oh no maybe I shouldn't have told you...;)

Ciao Amanda
PS I love reading your 'Brit' words they make me feel so homesick.

Amanda - yep we have Lindt

Good European chocolate. Do you mean milk chocolate or dark? There's some Seattle chocolates (dark) that are good. You can find some at Target in the fancy choco section.

I actually loved Hershey's because I did grow up on it, but now that I'm casein intolerant, it's dark all the way, and I have to read all the labels for milk fat. You made me LOL.~~Dee

Well, I am certainly glad to hear you say it!! I have thought the same thing for years and wondered how millions of ignorant people could keep on loving it. ;)

I <3 Belgian chocolate. Mmmmm. Or most of Ethel's chocolates (Chicago).

The first (and last) time I tried Hershey's choc I thought it tasted like vomit. I'm serious, revolting stuff. That's the only time I've ever thrown a chocolate bar away.

Jan - good to know I wasn't over reacting, as I spat it in the trash the thought went through my head "I can't believe I am spitting chocolate out!"

Hershey's Special Dark isnt bad .. it isnt great but ...

If you want good chocolate try Ghirardelli, Mrs See's, Jacques Torres ...and skip the milk chocolates and go for the dark or semi sweet ...

That's actually funny you say that. My friend from Belgium thinks Godiva is crap, too. And, if I could afford it, I'd live on the stuff. And, truth be told, I like Hersheys.

I think Cadbury's chocolates tastes better than Hershey's...but usually when it comes to chocolate, I try not to discriminate. LOL. ;)

i've never liked hersheys and much prefered nestles back when i was a kid. especially those hershey bars with almonds in them -- GAG REFLEX immediately. It is Dove, all Dove now. Have you tried their ice cream? OMG. Heaven on a stick.

We had my 5 year old's party in Hershey's Chicago last week. I was looking at all the goodies on the shelves thinking, "Hey, these would be nice gifts to take back to the UK", then realised I was talking about Hershey's chocloate!

No way! Say it isn't so! I love Hershey's kisses and chocolate bars. I can't believe it.

I think that's one of the reasons I've switched from milk to dark chocolate. I love milk chocolate in the UK, but avoid it here. As my kitchen cupboard proves (in my latest blog post) I have found plenty of dark chocolate to like - mostly at Trader Joe's. I like Green & Blacks too though. Somehwere I found a recipe for making brownies with chunks of Maya Gold in them - I will have to try it sometime!

You know, The Special One and The Youngest & The Eldest both think that 'real' Cadburys from the Uk is too milky for them and not chocolatey enough. Personally I'd give my right arm for some fruit'n'nut, and I'm not even a big chocolate lover!
