How to tell if you're an Okie!

Say the word BADMINTON (as in the game) out loud.

If it sounded like you said Badmitten, then you're definitely an Okie...because the PROPER pronunciation is badMINton people.

I just about spat my iced tea across the table laughing the other night when the hubster said this word during chat with friends. They all turned to me in amazement at my sputtering and loud guffaw and then disagreed when I took the mickey out of the way they said it...but sorry, you guys are just wrong!

I have never heard 'badminton' !
Being a transplant from one state to another, I am often kidded about how I say a word. Your first day of school still has me chuckling.

I say "badmitton" too! Looking at how it's spelled I guess that would be wrong. When I try to pronounce it correctly, I trip all over the word. I can't get it out. Now I'll have to practice. BadMINTon. BadMINTon.

I"ll work on it.

I stumbled upon you via SITS. I am totally cracking up at how the Oklahomans speak. I can say this since I have lived in OK all of my life. Don't you just LOVE hearing ya'll everywhere?

When I lived in California a friend of mine always used to pronounce Wimbledon as Wimbleton. I don't know why, as I usually find Americans have an aversion to the letter T. :-)

I said Badmitten til I saw the word spelled out .. then I knew that N was not silent.

I'm not an Okie (never even have been to that part o' the country) - I'm an East Coast girl, and we say Badmitten too. As a matter of fact, every single person I've ever heard say the word pronounces it badmitten.

Guess it is more pervasively, generically American then? :D

Cheers from a fellow SITSta!

HA HA HA - this post has me REALLY laughing! I'm having to be SO careful, now that I'm in Britain, not to revert to the Tulsa-native habit of saying "badmitton".

I'm doing pretty well with the challenge, by the way!
