BWOTD Competition!?

Okay so let's see what you've learnt with all these Brit' Words of the Day and reading my blog.

I thought we'd have a bit of fun and see which of my AMERICAN only (note Rob', Stuart, Toni, Janet's etc) readers could translate the following coloured words correctly. There will be a little prize for the reader who gets the most. So please translate the following into the comments, you may want to use your copy/paste!

'I got up this morning and had a bacon butty for breakfast, makes a change from toast & jam, whilst looking at my post. I headed off to work down the dual-carriageway, but noticed my indicator seemed to be on the blink. I pulled over, took a gander under the bonnet and even got my torch out of the boot, but couldn't fix it.

Made it into work and it wasn't long before I was ready for some elevenses. I popped out to the High Street, got some dosh from the hole in the wall and then indulged in some crisps and a pack of biccies.

By noon I was already contemplating lunch and today the bill was mine to get. Should I have some real comfort food like bangers & mash, or pop to the Chippie for some real Fish Fingers and greasy chips! The fair is in town and at quarter past three a colleague decided to make a run for some candy floss. At this rate I'll have gained a stone by bedtime!

Bit like a BWOTD crossword equivalent - good luck!

'I got up this morning and had a bacon BREAKFAST SANDWICH for breakfast, makes a change from toast & JELLY, whilst looking at my MAIL. I headed off to work down the DRIVEWAY, but noticed my TEMPERATURE GAGE seemed to be NOT WORKING PROPERLY. I pulled over, took a LOOK under the HOOD and even got my FLASHLIGHT out of theTRUNK, but couldn't fix it.

Made it into work and it wasn't long before I was ready for some SNACK/TEA. I popped out to the MAIN STREET, got some SNACK from the SMALL SHOP and then indulged in some CHIPS and a pack of NOT A CLUE.

By noon I was already contemplating lunch and today the ORDER was mine to get. Should I have some real comfort food like SAUSAGE & mash, or pop to the FAST FOOD JOINT for some real FRIED FISH and greasy POTATOES! The CARNAVALE is in town and at 3:15 a colleague decided to make a run for some COTTON CANDY. At this rate I'll have gained a POUND by bedtime!

Yeah, but, no, but I know all the answers....actually, I know exactly what you're saying, but there are one or two where I'm at a loss as to the local term! It is like learning a new language.

Sarah, your BWOTD is a really wonderful fun invention and is coincidentally rather educational. I for one enjoy it and today's idea is a winner.

I should have been banned from trying this, since I am a certified interpreter .... but

I got up this morning and had a bacon sandwich for breakfast, makes a change from toast and jelly, while (notice I changed whilst) looking at my mail. I headed off to work down the divided highway, but noticed my turn signal seemed to be broken. I pulled over, took a look under the hood and even got my flashlight out of the trunk, but couldn't fix it.

Made it into work and it wasn't long before I was ready for some munchies. I popped out to the Main Street, got some money from the ATM Machine and then indulged in some potato chips and a pack of cookies.

By noon I was already contemplating lunch and today the tab was mine to get. Should I have some real comfort food like sausage and mash, or pop to the Fish & Chip shop for some real fish sticks and greasy french fries!

A festival is in town and at 3:15 and a colleague decided to make a run for some cotton candy. At this rate I'll have gained fourteen pounds by bedtime!

I think I'm a bit too late!

OK I think I need to read your blog some more. At least all the BWOTD posts.

Had a good laugh at this Sarah. Great stuff.

Maybe you should compile a dictionary of words to help avoid misunderstandings. A sort of Holiday English booklet you could download.

Another problem is the different words used in different parts of the UK. I was emailing a friend in Northern Ireland, her daughter had been ill and I asked how the bairn was. She was puzzled and asked me what on earth "the bairn" meant. I totally forgot that it's only used in Scotland and the North East. So we even have problems amongst ourselves.

I look forward to learning more American speak on the offchance I can persuade my husband to visit the USA one day.

Oops! Forgot to say hope you're over your horrendous case of crud. Is that a cold?

Now there's another one for the list!

K, here I go! :) This is fun - you should do this more often!

'I got up this morning and had a bacon (big, fat piece of :) ) for breakfast, makes a change from toast & jelly, whilst looking at my mail. I headed off to work down the road, but noticed my turn signal seemed to be not working. I pulled over, took a look under the hood and even got my flashlight out of the trunk, but couldn't fix it.

Made it into work and it wasn't long before I was ready for some morning snacks/tea (maybe? this is digging into my memory...). I popped out to the Main Street, got some dosh (I should know this!) from the hole in the wall (local 7/11 type place?) and then indulged in some potato chips and a pack of cookies.

By noon I was already contemplating lunch and today the cost was mine to get. Should I have some real comfort food like potatoes and...oh! cabbage? spinach? something green?, or pop to the Chip shop for some real fish sticks and greasy fries! The fair (same?) is in town and at quarter past three a colleague decided to make a run for some cotton candy (Now I want some!). At this rate I'll have gained a pound? some sort of weight? by bedtime!

Oh please Miss! Please Miss! I know Miss! Oh ... I'm barred by virtue of being British? Blatant favouritism. With a 'U'.

I like that - very clever. Well done!

I'm American but I know how to translate all the words because I've been living in England for 21 years (and I happen to have an English mother too).

Oh, I'm so irked at myself for missing your blog too long. The last time I read faithfully was just the day before, but then I missed about a week and when I logged on I didn't have time to go back to where I had left off. Tonight, I took the time to go back to all unread posts. I could have done this, I think! Darn, darn, darn. Lesson learned. Don't miss more than a week of Brit Gal Sarah!
