"Hey Mum - it's a HAPPY day!"

My mum understands better than anyone else how happy these pictures make me! Yesterday after a very long 3-year wait I finally had a new dishwasher installed. Why the long wait? Well we all know I love the Hubster dearly, but he is a firm believer in not replacing appliances until they kick the bucket.

The old dishwasher came with the house when we moved in and so I was stuck with it. A few months later I found the original paperwork and discovered it was 21 years old then! They made them to last in those days - too long IMHO!

It worked fine, although it was incredibly noisy and our kitchen opens into our living room. I hated the darn thing, but it just kept plodding on satisfactorily. My mum on a visit descaled it and really gave it a deep clean, she knew how I felt about it. I hinted to friends that they might feel free to sneakily drop something into the bottom when visiting - but to no avail.

So last weekend when the floor was done and my 'favourite' appliance was sticking out like a sore thumb, I marched into Sears and just bought the quietest one in there. It's my new beautiful, sleek, shiny and quiet dishwasher. Guess what though, the Hubster is the one who read the book and fiddled this evening, with many oooh's and aarh's at all the things it does. He just said to me "I'm doing what I can sweetie to fill it up, so you can run it". MEN - sometimes we just need to show them what's best!

Our refrigerator now takes over on 26 years and counting...one of these days I may get lucky, surely it can't make 30 years - can it?!

My grandparents had this yellow refrigerator that lasted for well over 20+ years, it was ugly. My granny finally got rid of it and got a brand new stainless steel fridge that is very pretty! Hope yours dies soon!

Congrats on your new dishwasher! Unfortunately or fortunately (depends on how you feel about such things) this one may not last as long as the old one as they really, truly do not make them like they used to. (A person who repairs appliances told me that.)

Your old dishwasher looks just like mine, that came with the house too, and is probably of the same vintage. As are rest of the appliances.

I'm afaid I'm with hubster on this one, I won't replace stuff until they conk out.

Nice new appliance. I'm sure it's much greener too! So you are being good to the planet. Might that be a factor in replacing the old power hungry fridge? Hey I'm just trying to help.

My sister still has the family fridge, passed down from my Grandmother to my mother and now my sister has it. My grandmother died in 1952, so it's at least 60 years old! Sorry, you didn't want to hear that!

Fabulous.

In the FL condo my sister and I inherited from our parents are a stove and dishwasher that are 30 yrs old and work perfectly ... the fridge died about 4 yrs ago but it was resusitated with a new something or other ...

Husband just called, the plumber was by to give an 'estimate' for installing the new sink/vanity ... $400 .. Husband was not happy. I am sure he thinks he can do it himself ... however he did admit it needs to be 'done properly' ... MEN!

Have to say I'm with hubster too. Keep them as long as you can. The new stuff is total pants!

I bought a new quiet, sleek, shiny, eco friendly, expensive one too. Didn't last. Neither did my tumbler and the washer went the ssame way. They were both just about top of the German range that I was told would run for years! So I'm buying the cheapest ones I can find in future!

Wow, new one looks much better! I would just settle for ANY, though. I have dishpan hands. :(

Congrats on the new dishwasher! WOOHOO! I have had some noisy ones, some old ones and some new ones. I have also lived without one, and that was the worst.

You blog is snowing! That's so cool.

Wow! Your appliances out there in Oklahoma really last, hunh? Although I think long lasting appliances are wonderful, I, too am waiting for our dryer to die so we can get a more energy efficient one. I wonder how long that's going to take.

Oh phew. Glad to see that bottom pic as I first thought the top one was your now! A big improvement visually aside from anything else. I can't believe so many people in UK still don't have dishwashers. It is one of our luxuries we expect here!

We did the same thing. Put up with a noisy dishwasher for a really long time. Same situation. We couldn't run it and converse or watch tv in the family room.
When it died I led the charge to get the quietest one we could find. It was expensive but I love the various gizmos on it.
