What do you think?

Which should we go to see at the cinema today? Have you seen either or both?

Avatar I know nothing about it, apart from it's a huge success, hugely expensive, a fantasy (not usually a fan) and people keep raving about it. But what's holding me back is my fear it will make me feel queasy - seriously! The few times I have put on 3D glasses and watched something, most recently at the Adler Planetarium, even 30 mins made me feel yucky? Anyone have a similar problem with 3D but made it through Avatar okay?

Sherlock Holmes appeals because I love the stories, love Robert Downey Jr even more, action packed and it's a chance to see a wonderful re-creation of olde London I have heard.

Would love some opinions if you have them, and reassurance on Avatar not making me feel sick!

Miles and I saw Sherlock Holmes and we both loved it. It was pretty cool how they filmed London and Robert Downey Jr is my total crush. My only complaint is that it was a little bit more of an action movie than I hoped. I'm a total girl and get bored with too much action. I was hoping for a bit more of the detective/mystery movie.
I haven't seen avatar and will probably get shot for saying this, but I have no desire to see it. I just can't do fantasy.

My son saw Avatar and (knowing I can get motion sickness easily) told me not to waste my money, lol. He saw it in 3D and thought it was good!

My husband saw Avatar in 3D and said it was okay. He really wants to see it in 2D, so we're going to go back together. I get motion sick over the littlest car or bus rides, so I wasn't going to dare go see this in 3D. He said it was quite dark (as all 3D movies are, apparently), and the edges of some of the 3D things (tables/counters, for example) were cut off on the edge of the screen, ruining the 3D aspect. He's very excited about seeing it again and feels it will be better in 2D.

Thank being said, we do want to see Sherlock Holmes, but it's a rent for us, not a go to.

Let us know what you think of whichever you decide :)

DH and I saw Sherlock Holmes and we both loved it. :D It was very interesting how Guy Ritchie filmed the movie and how he put background information about Holmes we normally do not hear about. Plus, how could you go wrong with Robert Downey Jr?!

I'm with Kris, I have no desire to see Avatar so I can't comment on that movie.

3D is no good for me, as I cant focus 2 eyes together.lol.

I've seen trailers of both.
I would have chosen Sherlock Holmes but think they've spoiled it by turning it into another action film and it will lose the atmosphere.
That's exactly what they've done with the last two James Bond films. Lost all the individuality and humour that made the Bond series special.

Think I'd stay at home and keep warm.

Saw Holmes and loved it. Action ,yes but still maintained Holmes "cerebral" aspect. Two leads played well off each other. Rachel McAdams would not have been my choice for Irene but she was okay. Definitely left door open for sequel(s)

Funny you should ask. I did a post about it on Friday. Six of us went and we all left the theatre really excited with the experience. We LOVED it!

Having said that (and I'm the only one, mind you) I did get motion sickness. I'm prone to it. I think the edges weren't cut off for us because we saw it at the IMAX. I don't know what it would be like at a regular theatre. However, that 3D experience is truly something new. I've seen 3D many, many years ago but this is into a whole 'nother dimension. Wow!

Buuuut... yes, I did get motion sickness for a while and then it went away after I took my glasses off for a while. It is a 2.5 hour movie.

Then I again, I've heard that Sherlock is excellent, too.

But I really loved Avatar!

Thank you so much everyone, after reading your comments our decision was easy. We are off to see the delicious Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes.

Just not prepared to risk motion sickness, which I suffer from very easily!

Oh good thing! I just got a comment on my blog about how 3D really made them sick. Probably good idea for you to skip the 3D. However, you could still see the movie at the regular theater.

I would have chosen Sherlock Holmes too. Please give us your movie review when you have a chance:)

My vote is Sherlock Holmes! John and I saw it and we really liked it. For some reason Avatar just doesn't appeal to me.

I have a day off on Friday and I have the same dilemma. I think I will go see Sherlock Holmes first and see how much time I have left for Avatar. The theater near me has two variations, 3D and 3D with IMAX.....I will barf if I see it in IMAX. 3D I can handle, I think, but I think I'd rather see it just as a plain ol' flick if it's possible. sigh.....
I look forward to seeing which you choose.

Oh darn. I'm late to this party. We saw Avatar on opening night - first time I have ever seen a movie on the first day. The CGI was very good and that part of it was fun. We saw it in 2D and I want to see it in 3D. The story was simple and unoriginal. I like fantasy and sci-fi myself so maybe I was expecting more than most people would. Visually, though, it was fun.
