SNAKE!!!!

I have been cleaning out an indoor room off the back of our garage this afternoon. I was wearing gloves and clearing out lots of stuff from a floor to ceiling cupboard. I moved some silk flowers and thought what is that back in the corner, it looks like it's coiled up? I even leaned in for a closer look!

It took about 4 seconds for my eyes to take in the coil, the brown pattern and connect with my brain!

The first the Hubster knew was as I flew out the door and sprinted towards him yelling "SNAKE" and screaming, whilst slapping at myself manically.

I have no doubt if I'd been caught on camera it would have been quite a sight, as I hopped around hitting myself and letting out tourettes type yelps, screams and cuss words!! To say I was totally FREAKED is an understatement.

I ran indoors and totally freaked out Bon Bon as well, with my continued slapping at myself and freaked out noises. I just felt like I needed a shower!

The Hubster killed it and threw it over the back fence, then came in to check on me. It was a 3ft+ Bull snake, so harmless but they do look like a Rattler, and who cares what it is anyway. The shock it gave me, my heart rate went through the roof and I still haven't ventured back.

The Hubster is irritated with me because I am not ready to go back out there yet. But when you come from a country where you usually only see a snake in the zoo, it takes awhile to get over such a close and surprising encounter. This will give me nightmares for a few days!

I have been wandering around my yard for the past 3 years (since the last encounter) and I think I gradually fell into a false sense of security that the yard was safe. My peace of mind is now shattered!

I've seen lots of snakes and am not scared of them in the abstract but coming upon one unexpectedly is still an extreme shocker that takes some time to get over.

{HUGS} and *grin* at your aerobic snake find. I am not fond of the critters either.

I've lived in rattlesnake country most of my life and yet I have the same reaction as you (well, not quite to that extreme) when I am taken by surprise by a snake!

Bugger...
Last year I had an unexpected encounter with a six inch Garter Snake, harmless as a fly, but try convincing me that !
I've been scared to go back around the pond ever since, and wear gloves everytime.
You are correct m'dear it comes from having NO snakes.

It took me all of 2 hours to calm down totally, it was the shock factor without a doubt.

I do not blame you one tiny bit! I still freak when I see them does not matter if they are big or small. Ick!

LOL. Funny. There are no snakes in my neighborhood and there are strict laws against keeping them as pets in Hawaii. I have seen snakes only in the zoo.

P.S. I would freak out, too!!!

Grrrhahahhaha! But many Okies (me included) would have the same reaction. Too funny! where's the vidoe camera when you need it?

Oh, you totally have my sympathy. I hate the things. I can just about steel myself to look at one in a tank in the zoo - just about. But to come across one like that by chance. Aaaaaargh.

I've been determined not to pass on my own phobia to my kids, so I've been pleased that they've all been fine when they've been introduced to snakes (it seems to be something that happens these days in pre-school - you get someone to come in with exotic animals for the kids to touch). But sadly, my daughter and a friend unearthed a snake in the playground a few weeks ago, and the shock of it has definitely made her scared of them now. It's a shame.

What a fright! I can't say that I'm overly fond of snakes. But always liked to see the Bull snakes in my garden as they ate the spiders and helped keep away the rattlers.

I see snakes often and tend to live in peace with them, but I still hate to come upon one by surprise.
Your post reminded me of an experience I had as a child. We were playing hide 'n seek and I decided to hide in a window well beside the house. I jumped in and squatted down. When I stood to get out, I saw that the bottom of the window well was covered with squirming baby snakes.I ran screaming into the house, tearing off my clothes and slapping myself to knock off any snakes that may have crawled onto me. So, I know exactly how you felt.

I think you remained perfectly calm under the circumstance, in the time you took to go in doors I would have packed, thrown my self on the next BA flight and gone home to the snakeless island!

Oh poor thing. I don't like them either.

Bless your heart. I would have done the same thing. Had a small garden snake show up in my kitchen at 3 am one day. I ended up on top of the table screaming bloody murder holding my silly dog (who thought the world was ending by the way I was screaming). Hubby had to get up and throw it out the back door. He was not happy about being woke up that early. LOL

If it was harmless, why did The Hubster kill it ? By all means throw it over the fence but surely, let it live.

Ian we're overrun with snakes here, harmless and otherwise. This was young and already over 3ft long and in town. Snakes in town die, end of story for everyone here.

Just a few days after I read your blog post, a friend of mine who moved out to Arizona last year posted some photos on his Facebook page of snakes. He was walking along and found a HUGE pile of rattlesnakes. From the photo it looks like there are about 10 - 15 curled around each other. A short distance away there are another 4 or 5 curled up. Gives me the chills just thinking about it.

Good thing you don't live any further west.
